For thousands of years the coastal eskimo have survived on the marine mammals of the far north. The walrus and the bowhead whale have sustained their culture since the beginning. As their primary food source, they still harvest the walrus and whale, and are then allowed to use the walrus ivory and whale baleen in their native crafts. These are the only people allowed to work with these marine mammal products, as for most, it is their only source of income.
